Recently, users often ask about the causes of the sticky surface after curing vinyl ester resin. This article gives you a brief analysis of the causes and solutions to this problem.

vinyl ester resin

1. vinyl ester resin after curing the surface of the sticky reasons

The curing mechanism of vinyl ester resin is free radical curing. That is, the free radical generated by the initiator activates the double bond in the resin and cross-linking agent, cross-linking reaction and produced. The oxygen in the air has a blocking effect on the surface of the vinyl ester resin, which will make the product surface sticky and cure incomplete.

2. How to solve the sticky surface of vinyl ester resin after curing?

The main methods to solve the surface stickiness of vinyl ester resin after curing are the physical method of isolation from the air and the chemical method of polyester modification.

(1) physical methods

a) Add wax liquid. Paraffin wax is added to float on the surface of the resin to block oxygen to achieve the purpose of air drying. Paraffin wax can be added at the time of resin production or afterward.

Advantages: simple, effective, and low cost.

Disadvantages: The addition of paraffin wax will affect the interlayer adhesion, and the wax film on the surface needs to be ground to get a non-stick and glossy surface.

b) Plastic film is used as an air-isolated covering layer. After the paste system is completed, a plastic film is laid on the resin surface to drive away the residual air inside, which can isolate air to prevent the surface from being sticky.

Disadvantage: It is unsuitable for a specially shaped surface, and it increases the cost of the process and raw material, bringing a lot of inconvenience to the construction.

(2) Chemical method

(a) the introduction of an "air-drying" functional group in the resin, changing the structure of polyester. Mainly in the polyester structure is the introduction of some air drying groups or polar groups, through these groups to inhibit oxygen, and improve the resin's fast drying, to achieve the effect of a non-stick surface.

b) Select the suitable initiator-promoter system. Choosing the right system and ratio can improve the resin's curing degree, thus avoiding surface stickiness.

The above is why the surface is sticky after curing vinyl ester resin. If you need more detailed information, welcome to contact us!
